ABOUT

Spare Handle are a CoHousing Community

‘Spare Handle’ You may ask?

At one of our very first meetings we were talking about sharing, caring and giving, in our envisaged community.   Someone said that one of the bad things about living alone is the Bogof's, pack of two, two for the price of one, offers available in society today. It's always good to share, give or exchange with someone else.  The contributor said she had recently had to buy a kitchen cabinet handle as one of hers had broken and she needed to replace it.  The local DIY store could only sell the handles in packs of two.  What to do? Another member spoke up and said that she had a number of uses for a 'SpareHandle'....  Our name was decided, how could we not use it!

We are hoping to set up a Co-Housing Project in York.    We want to build a community of around 20-25 individual houses with some communal facilities, somewhere to live, grow, share and develop now and in the future, while allowing us to have individual independence and privacy. We are looking for people who would like to join us on our journey in working towards and bringing this to fruition.

We are looking for anyone who might be interested in this project, or just interested in finding out more about co housing.

Have a look at our pages to check out some preliminary information about the project and links to other interesting sites.

If you know of any other family, friends, colleagues or acquaintances, who might be interested, please do encourage them to have a look and contact us if you would like to become involved, or just keep an eye on us to follow our progress.

To date we have had several meetings with the City of York Council, visited existing co-housing, made links with Yorspace (existing co housing org in York), done a fair amount of research and talked a great deal about what we want and contacted possible partner organisations.

We have received a small Grant towards our initial set up costs and training programme and currently we are working with Leeds Community Homes who are helping and advising us along the way.

We are a member of the UK Cohousing Network
